The Battle of Fort Sumter was the bombardment and surrender of Union-held Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina between April 12 and 14, 1861. The fort is best known as the site where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired. In 1966, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
