The Royal Ballet is a ballet company. It is based at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, England. The company was founded in 1931 by Dame Ninette de Valois. It became the resident ballet company of the Royal Opera House in 1946.
It was granted a royal charter in 1956 as Britain's flagship national ballet company. It has its own training school in the Covent Garden Opera House. The company was previously known as Vic-Wells Ballet and Sadler's Wells Ballet.
Great names associated with the company include Alicia Markova, Anton Dolin, Tamara Karsavina, Anthony Dowell, Antoinette Sibley, Sir Frederick Ashton, and Nicholas Sergeyev. The Founder Musical Director was the conductor and composer Constant Lambert.
