Uncle Tom's Cabin

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was published in 1852. The novel tells the story of Uncle Tom, a slave in the American South. The book had great impact upon America and Britain before the beginning of the American Civil War. The novel is famous for the dramatic scene depicting a fugitive slave named Eliza running over ice floes in the Ohio River with her baby. Famous characters include Eva, Topsy, and Simon Legree. The novel has been adapted to stage plays and movies several times.
