Fictional last words in Avatar media

The numerous deaths across all different media of Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko's Avatar universe have yielded many memorable last words.

Cartoon continuity

  • Hmph. You cannot keep protecting him from his destiny.
    • Who: Monk Tashi
    • Source: The Storm
    • Notes: In Aang's flashback, Monk Gyatso tries to alleviate the responsibility placed onto Aang as the Avatar when dour Monk Tashi complains to Monk Pasang about Aang neglecting his training. To that end, Aang was to be sent to the Eastern Air Temple to complete his training. A short time later after Aang fled the temple with Appa and was subsequently frozen into an iceberg for one hundred years, Tashi was killed along with the other Air Nomads during the Air Nomad Genocide.
  • You and Aang must be separated. The Avatar will be sent away to the Eastern Air Temple to complete his training.

    • Notes: Says this line after Monk Pasang made the decision to send the Avatar away to the Eastern Air Temple to complete his airbending training, concluding that they needed to do what was best for the world. Completely unaware that Aang eavesdropped the conversation and ran away from his responsibilities until it was too late, Pasang was later killed along with the rest of the Air Nomads when the Fire Nation attacked the four air temples.
  • Aang? I'm not going to let them take you away from me. Aang?

    • Notes: Says this line after discovering that Aang fled the temple with Appa and was subsequently frozen into an iceberg for one hundred years. Gyatso never saw Aang again and was later killed along with the other Air Nomads during the Air Nomad Genocide.
  • Admiral Choi! Prepare to meet your fate!

    • Notes: Says this line before charging towards Admiral Zhao, who easily dodges the attack, and sends Hahn falling into the water below. Whether this killed him is unknown.
  • It's my duty, Sokka. [Sokka: I won't let you! Your father told me to protect you!] I have to do this.

    • Source: The Siege of the North, Part 2
    • Notes: Says this line before sacrificing herself, giving up her mortal human life to revive the Moon Spirit. She then becomes the new Moon Spirit herself.
  • It can't be!
    • Who: Zhao
    • Source: The Siege of the North, Part 2
    • Notes: Says this line right after discovering the moon has returned. He is then grabbed and drowned by the Water Spirit, and his soul is imprisoned in the Fog of Lost Souls for all eternity.
  • You dare suggest I betray Iroh? My firstborn? Directly after the demise of his only beloved son?! I think Iroh has suffered enough. But you? Your punishment has scarcely begun!

    • Source: Zuko Alone
    • Notes: In Zuko's flashback, shortly after the death of Iroh's son Lu Ten, Ozai demanded that Iroh be passed over as heir to the throne, inciting his father's fury. As such, Azulon wanted to make Ozai feel the pain of losing a firstborn son by ordering him to take the life of Zuko. The next morning, Azula casually tells Zuko that Azulon passed away in his sleep - in truth, Ozai forced Ursa to poison him.
  • I'm not leaving. I can't. I've spent too long trying to find this place. There's not another collection of knowledge like this on earth. I could spend an eternity in here.

    • Notes: As the members of Team Avatar escape the library from Wan Shi Tong, Zei tried desperately to grab as many books as he could. Eventually, he simply declared that he would rather "spend an eternity" in the library than lose all of his life's work. Zei ended up dying in the library, inadvertently fulfilling his wish.
  • Don't worry, Katara. I'll be fine.
    • Who: Jet
    • Source: Lake Laogai
    • Notes: Struck down by Long Fei in battle, Jet says the above line to encourage Team Avatar to leave without him, though Toph confirms he was lying and he passes away shortly after in the Freedom Fighter's arms.
  • I'm sorry, Katara.
    • Who: Aang
    • Source: The Crossroads of Destiny
    • Notes: Aang is struck down by Azula whilst in the Avatar State. He is brought back to life by Katara using the mystic spirit water of the Northen Water Tribe.
  • Please...
    • Who: Avatar Roku
    • Source: The Avatar and the Fire Lord
    • Note: While trying to stop an erupting volcano with the help of Fire Lord Sozin, Roku is suddenly struck by the volcano's poisonous fumes. After pleading for Sozin's help, he and his dragon Fang die from the pyroclastic flow that hits them both, only for Roku to be reincarnated immediately after as Aang.
  • It's me. Take me as your prisoner.

    • Notes: To protect her daughter when the Southern Raiders attacked the Southern Water Tribe looking for its last Waterbender, Kya claims to be the one, and is killed by Yon Rha, as per his order not to take prisoners.

    • Who: The Lieutenant of the Equalists

    • Notes: It is unknown if the Lieutenant was killed, but he is never seen or heard from again after this
  • I'd almost forgotten the sound of my own name.

    • Notes: He says this before using an electrical gauntlet to blow up the fuel tank of the boat he and Amon are traveling in, killing him and his brother instantly.
