itself into 'a meeting of friends and admirers'. To this there could have been no objection, and there was none. The 'friends and admirers' of the retiring Lieutenant-Governor were at liberty to do what they pleased; and the public had no right to interfere or to protest. This was a notable triumph of middle class educated opinion in Bengal, which, it was evident, had now become a living force and had to be reckoned with.
