INSTRUCTION
My hands that guide a needleIn their turn are ledRelentlessly and deftly,As a needle leads a thread.
Other hands are teachingMy needle; when I sewI feel the cool, thin fingersOf hands I do not know.
They urge my needle onward,They smooth my seams, untilThe worry of my stitchesSmothers in their skill.
All the tired women,Who sewed their lives away,Speak in my deft fingersAs I sew today.
THREE SONGS FOR SEWING

A fibre of rain on a window-paneTalked to a stitching thread:In the heaviest weather I hold togetherThe weight of a cloud!
To the fibre of rain on a window-paneThe talkative stitches said:I hold together with the weight of a featherThe heaviest shroud!
