If you love me, I regret it very, very much, for I do not love you and I can never marry you—I don't think I shall ever marry. I'd rather you wouldn't come to see me any more. So good-bye and God bless you." She held the door open for him to go out.
A great peace had come over Nessie. Speech and action were in character at last. She could have cited one the gist of this scene and conversation from half-a-dozen novels packed away in her trunk upstairs had she been calm enough to do it.
