Avar Inroad Villages rearward burn Smoke black the sky Torrents flame pour onward from afar Over the ripened corn and mcadow grass rumbling cloud And from these places rolls Of Avar soldiery The slant eyed horsemen Sway buoyantly upon their horses for There no peril And they are content Laden with goblers and with crucifixes With reliquiaries candalabra cruses With vestments mantles flagons and apparel Lowing goats and sheep cows and bleat Which are borne amid the warriors Rings out like sweetest music their ears And each one drags along having entwined ropes about his bony hand Tresses like copes about Three four women naked utterly utterly And with their blood bedabbled for their their breasts pierced throughbreast through With sheer wound are all and through .
