strata, or, on the other, the philological matters of interest with which the original texts abound. Such notes as there are are introduced merely to illuminate or explain occasional points of importance, or to mark differences in the texts, and we do not profess to have produced a fully annotated edition. To do that would require several massive volumes.

We had, at first, intended to add a biographical and geographical section regarding the characters and places mentioned in the tales; but our notes became so voluminous that we recognized, at an early stage, that such must be reserved for a future occasion.

The short bibliography attached is not a bibliography of all the works we have had occasion to refer to in our studies of the Mabinogion; it is merely a bibliography of books pertinent to the task of translating, which we have used.
