GENERAL DIRECTIONS
1. These Directions may be cited as "The Traffic Signs General Directions, 1957".
2.—(1) The Traffic Signs (General) Directions, 1950(a)[1], and the Traffic Signs Directions, 1951(b)[2], are hereby revoked.
(2) Any reference in these Directions to a diagram number shall, except where otherwise expressly provided, be construed as a reference to that diagram number in the First Schedule to the Traffic Signs Regulations, 1957 (hereinafter in these Directions referred to as "the Regulations") and any reference to any sign shall be construed as including any variation thereof permitted by the Regulations.
(3) These Directions shall apply in relation to traffic signs situate on or near any road immediately before the coming into operation of these Directions, as they apply in relation to traffic signs erected after the coming into operation of these Directions.
(4) Any reference in these Directions to any enactment shall be construed as a reference to that enactment as amended by any subsequent enactment.
(5) The Interpretation Act, 1889, shall apply to the interpretation of these Directions as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.
3. Signs shown in the following diagrams:
(a) Nos. 113, 114, 115, 144, 148, 150, 151, 152, 153, 204, 209, 210, 211, 214, 215, 304 to 324 inclusive, 326, 327, and 405
(b) Nos. 429 to 448 inclusive and 450 if more than five route panels are included in a sign;
(c) Nos. 452 and 479 if more than three place names are included in any one panel, or if more than ten place names are included in a sign; and
(d) No. 217 if erected elsewhere than on the central island of a roundabout; may be placed only at sites approved in writing by or on behalf of the Minister or the Secretary of State, as the case may be, whether before or after the date of these Directions.
4. Signs shown in diagrams Nos. 209, 210, 211, 214, 215, 304 to 321 inclusive, 325, 327, 401, 406, 411, 412, 413 and 434 may be placed on or near, and carriageway markings shown in diagrams Nos. RM14, RM15 and RM16 in the Second Schedule to the Regulations may be placed on a road only to indicate the effect of an Order, Regulation or Byelaw which prohibits or restricts the use of a road by vehicular traffic.
5. Warning signs shown in diagrams Nos . 105 to 112 inclusive, 118 to 121 inclusive, 124 to 127 inclusive, 130, 131, 133, 135 to 139 inclusive, 141, 145, 146, 154 and 156 may be fixed to a common post surmounted by one warning triangle at any site where the dangers to which the signs relate are adjacent to that site.
6. Signs shown in diagrams Nos. 105, 106, 107 and 108 may be placed only at the approach to a road junction, and only if no direction sign indicating the layout of the junction has been placed on that approach.
