CHARACTER OF CAPANEUS.

FROM THE SUPPLICES OF EURIPIDES. (860-868.)

Ὁρᾷς τὸν ἁβρὸν οὗ βέλος διέπτατο;Καπανεὺς ὅδ' ἐστίν· κ.τ.λ.
Seest thou this stately one, through whom the boltOf Jove hath wing'd its way?—'Tis Capaneus—His means were ample; but his noble mindNever grew haughty, or puff'd up by wealth. He was a man true both to absent friendsAnd present ones,—a merit rarely met with.Guileless in manners, and in his addressMost affable and kind. His plighted wordHe never broke to slave or citizen.
