THE STARS.
Sind die Sterne fromme Lammer.
Are the stars the lambs of heavenThat, when fades the day on high,Night, the shepherdess, doth leadTo the blue fields of the sky?
Are they lilies, silver lilies,That, from out their cups of light,Pour the fragrant waves of slumberOn the weary earth all night?
Are they lighted tapers, shiningOn the holy altar high,When the deep and solemn darknessFills the wide dome of the sky?
No! they are the silver lettersIn which loving angels write,On the azure page of heaven,Countless songs in lines of light.Geibel.
