Poems (Hooper)/The Water-Lily

THE WATER-LILY.
Die stille Wasserrose.
The beauteous water-lilyFloats on the azure stream;Around her snow-white calyxGlisten the leaves and gleam.
The moon pours down from heavenA flood of golden light;Pours down its fairest moonbeamsInto her bosom white.
Circling around the flowerA fair white swan doth go;He looks upon the lily,And singeth soft and low.
So soft and sweet he singeth,The while he glides along,O lily, snow-white lily,Canst understand his song?Geibel.
