Poems (Mary Coleridge)/Poem 189

CLXXXIX ON A SUDDEN DEPARTURE
Stay, stay my heart, what is it thou dost feel? There's many cross the sea and come again. Why should the waves thy only treasure steal? Is she alone the sport of wind and rain? She will return once more to help and heal,Refrain, my heart, refrain.
Possess thyself in patience, thinking howThou wilt endure the inevitable dayWhen for that voyage, either she or thou,Whence there is no return, must go away. Then, then gird up thy strength to bear; but nowStay, stay my heart, thy restless beating stay.
