Poems (Mary Coleridge)/Poem 223
CCXXIIISOLO
Leave me alone! my tears would make you laugh,Or kindly turn away to hide a smile. My brimming granaries cover many a mile; How should you know that all my corn is chaff?Leave me alone! my tears would make you laugh.
Leave me alone! my mirth would make you weep.I only smile at all that you hold dear;I only laugh at that which most you fear;I see the shallows where you sound the deep.Leave me alone! my mirth would make you weep.
