The Strand Magazine/1896

Highlights

This year sees several new sets of serialised fiction appear in the magazine, some of which are already present on the site in a collected form:

We also see the first serialised book appear in the magazine (something which would become more common from this point, although individual short stories were still preferred):

  • Rodney Stone, by A. Conan Doyle. A rather overlooked part of Doyle's canon, this is a coming-of-age novel following a boy as he navigates the world of bare-knuckle boxing.

Other things to note:

  • Issue 68 sees the introduction of the Curiosities section, a staple for many years to come, generally made up of reader-contributed photographs and other oddities.
  • The December issue sees the first contribution of puzzles from Henry E. Dudeney. In later years he would contribute a monthly puzzles column to the magazine called Perplexities which ran for almost 20 years.
