Cuban national parks

In Cuba, national parks and protected areas are primarily managed by the National Center for Protected Areas (CNAP), which operates under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA). CNAP is responsible for coordinating conservation efforts, managing biodiversity, and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources within these areas.

There are eight national parks in Cuba, six biosphere reserves, plus protected natural areas with other designations.

Biosphere reserves

Cuba has six protected natural areas that are part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Three are also national parks (listed above). The other three are:

  • 🌍 Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve - mountainous former coffee plantation was reforested and is now home to a number of endangered and endemic species
  • 🌍 Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve - large reserve with mangrove swamps, rugged mountains, and tropical forests
  • 🌍 Baconao Biosphere Reserve - various ecosystems including tropical and cloud forests, caves, limestone plateaus, and coral reefs
