Dhaka/Outer

The outer suburbs of Dhaka are a large semi-rural and industrial area in the north and east of the Bangladeshi capital. Uttara, in the north, is home to the major entry point for most visitors to the country, Shahjalal International Airport. In the east, urbanisation has not occurred due to the frequent flooding that happens on a yearly basis. The thanas (districts) here are still defined as part of the Dhaka Metropolitan Area, as their western edges are now the site of new suburbs and developments.

• 🌍 Zinda Park (জিন্দা পার্ক), Zinda Park Road (about 22 km northeast of Dhaka, off N105), ☏ +88 01716260908. A nature park/getaway of sorts with ponds, boat rides, along with a library and mosque. (updated Aug 2020)
• 🌍 Dharmarajika Buddhist Monastery Complex (Kamalapur Buddhist Monastery) (ধর্মরাজিকা বুদ্ধিস্ট মোনাস্টেরী কমপ্লেক্স), Atisha Dipankar Sarak, Kamalapur, ☏ +880 2 841-162, mahathero@dhammarajika.com. A Buddhist temple and monastery established in 1960, with a number of other facilities on site. There are various mosaics, murals, statues and artefacts at the monastery.  
• 🌍 Uttara Lake (Western Uttara). It is a water body adjacent to Sectors 10, 9, 7, and 3 in West Uttara. Such a natural feature within an urban setting enhances the beauty of Uttara. However, due to encroachment and pollution, much of its beauty has faded. Nowadays, the lake often dries up outside the monsoon season. Recent development work has also changed its original state.  
• 🌍 Sector 7 Park, Road 1, Sector 7. Located beside Uttara High School and College, this is a large and beautiful park. It is an ideal place to sit and breathe amidst nature. Note that it has specific visiting hours which may change from time to time.  
• 🌍 Dhaka Metro Rail Exhibition and Information Center (MERC), Diabari Depot, Sonargaon Janapath. 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM (closed on Sundays). This center was established to inform and raise awareness about the Dhaka Metro Rail. Alongside the metro rail experience, visitors can learn about its history through galleries. You can also purchase model metro trains here, which are not available elsewhere. 10.  
• 🌍 RAJUK Uttara Apartment Project (RUAP), Sector 18. This is a residential area developed by RAJUK. Here the tall buildings stand out in the flat landscape and attract visitors. The natural environment also fascinates people. Many come here to see the blooming Kans grass. At the entrance on Avenue 1, there is the RUAP Food Court which opens in the evening, offering a variety of tasty street foods.  
• 🌍 Diabari Lake (From the Khalpar area of Sonargaon Janapath). This lake stretches from the Khalpar of Sector 12 through Sectors 15 and 17 up to Mirpur DOHS. Its rural environment makes it one of the most popular attractions in Uttara.  
• 🌍 Varsity Square (Avenue 7, Sector 17). This is an area located in Sector 17. To its south are official buildings of various universities and institutions. Many visitors come to see these aesthetic buildings in a semi-rural setting. The area also has several restaurants.  
• 🌍 Uttara Sarbojonin Puja Temple, Plot 1, Road 2, Block E, Sector 17. Established in 2023, this Hindu temple is not very ornate, but it is beautifully decorated during festivals. Those occasions are the best time to visit.  
• 🌍 Vrindavan, Road 16, Avenue 6, Sector 17. Located very close to Mirpur DOHS, this area is popular for its Kans grass fields.  

• 🌍 Mugdho Mancha, Sangam square, Rabindra Sarani, Sector 7. The only cultural venue in Uttara. On various special occasions, concerts, street plays, and cultural programs are organized here.  
• 🌍 Fantasy Island, Sector 15, Sonargaon Janapath (On the way from Khalpar to Diabari roundabout), ☏ +8801841-242712. This is an amusement park. Though small in size, it is not a bad place to spend some leisure time. It also has a cinema hall, and if you buy a ticket for the hall, entry to the park is free. 200.  
• 🌍 Pyramid Point Resort, North Point Road, Diabari. A resort located in the Diabari for leisure. Some wild animals are kept here for display.  
• 🌍 BD Kayaking Zone (On the way to Mirpur DOHS along Artist Kamrul Hasan Road from the north, just before Diabari Lake), ☏ +8801820971111. 10:00 am – 7:00 pm. The only place in Diabari Lake for kayaking. 100–150.  

• 🌍 Jamuna Future Park, ☏ +880 389-4558003. South Asia's largest shopping mall by floor space. Opened in 2013 after much delay, but many of the stores remain empty making it a less than worthwhile shopping experience.  

• 🌍 Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital, Sector 6, Isha Khan Avenue, ☏ +8801720013923. The only government hospital in Uttara.  
• 🌍 Uttara Adhunik Medical College and Hospital, House 34, Road 4, Sector 9, Sonargaon Janapath. Also known as Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital, it is the largest hospital in the area.
