Maclean

Maclean is a town of 2,800 (2021) in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. It's a nice riverside town along the Clarence River and a very short detour from the M1 Pacific Mwy between Sydney and Brisbane.

Maclean is on the M1 Pacific Mwy, about 115 km (71 mi) north of Coffs Harbour, 90 km (56 mi) north of Woolgoolga and 95 km (59 mi) south of Ballina.

From Grafton, it is 46 km (29 mi) northeast via the B76 Big River Way.

By coach and bus

Local buses connect Maclean to Grafton, Yamba and Iluka.

There is also a once-daily coach between Grafton and Byron Bay via Ballina, which connects with the Casino XPT headed northbound or the Brisbane XPT headed southbound.

  • πŸ“ 🌍 Maclean Lookout, Wharf St / Lookout Rd. From the lookout, a vantage point on Wharf Street, you can see some of the hundred or so islands within the Clarence River. It's a good spot to stop by if you want to break up a roadtrip. OSM directions target=_blank
  • Woodford Island. The main island, enclosed between Grafton and Maclean by two branches of the Clarence River might be frequently flooded, but it's also the largest river island in the Southern Hemisphere at a mere 37 kmΒ².
