From Proto-Eastern Polynesian *aanuanua, from Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *nuanua, from Proto-Eastern Oceanic *nua-nua. Compare with Maori āniwaniwa, Tahitian ānuanua, Samoan nuanua.[1][2][3]
