σέλαχος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

The formation resembles στέλεχος (stélekhos), τᾰ́ρῑχος (tắrīkhos) and τέμᾰχος (témăkhos). Connected with σέλᾰς (sélăs, light, glow, beam) already by Galen, because of the phosphorescent light of certain cartilaginous fishes; yet the suffix -ᾰχ- (-ăkh-) may point to a Pre-Greek origin. The old connection with Proto-Germanic *selhaz (seal) is untenable.
