Borrowed from Middle Russian Ꙗ҆́кꙋцкои҆ (Ja҆́kuckoi҆), ellipsis of Ꙗ҆́кꙋцкои҆ острогъ (Ja҆́kuckoi҆ ostrog, literally “Yakutian Ostrog”). See Russian яку́т (jakút) for further etymology.
