Usage notes

гэ́ны (hény) is an older, dialectal demonstrative pronoun. In Standard Academic Belarusian, the regular system makes only a two-way distinction between demonstratives in relation to the speaker and addressee:

(proximal) гэ́ты (héty, “this”)

(distal) той (toj, “that”)

In dialects, older texts, and some speakers' usage, a three-way distinction is sometimes observed:

(proximal, near the speaker) гэ́ты (héty, “this”)

(medial, closer to the addressee or in between) гэ́ны (hény, “that”)

(distal, away from both speaker and addressee) той (toj, “that yonder”)^[1]^[2]
