Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠳᠠᠪᠤᠰᠤ (dabusu), from Middle Mongol ᠳᠠᠪᠤᠰᠤᠨ (dabusun), from Proto-Mongolic *dabusun, probably borrowed from an early Turkic language, compare Buryat дабһан (dabhan), Kalmyk давсн (davsn), Dongxiang dansun; Manchu ᡩᠠᠪᠰᡠᠨ (dabsun); Chuvash тӑвар (tăvar).
