From earlier *kinni < *kenni < *kendi, from Proto-Turkic *kẹntü (“self; himself, herself”). Compare Turkish kendi (“self, own, he/she/himself”).

However, Radloff associates this word with киһи (kihi, “person, human”). (*kihiniki > *kiiniiki > kini)
