тернеция

Russian

Etymology

Borrowed from translingual ternetzi (as the specific epithet of Gymnocorymbus ternetzi). The species was named after ichthyologist Carl Ternetz (whence also Anostomus ternetzi and Liotyphlops ternetzii). The surname originates from the Slavic languages. Compare Терниц (Ternic), likely related to Russian те́рница (térnica), Ukrainian те́рниця (térnycja), possibly derived from an agricultural occupational surname.
