Etymology

From у (u, “in, at”) +‎ дома́ (domá, “the home”, definite objective of дом (dom)). Whilst дома́ (domá) was originally an adverb in its own right, it became re-analyzed as the definitive objective of дом (dom, “home”), i.e. "the home". Due to this, it came to be used with a preposition, such as у (u) or rarely до (do).

  • This is a rare exception of a masculine noun form ending in -а being pronounced as [-a], as opposed to [-ɤ] (e.g. ума́ (umá), IPA(key): [oˈmɤ]).
