Originally a fenya cant term, possibly from German Fahrt (“ride”), from fahren (“to drive”), because the corresponding Russian verb везти (vezti) means both “to drive” and “to have luck”; alternatively, perhaps from фортуна (fortuna, “fortune, luck”).
