Contraction of ա՛յ տղա (áy tġa). Alternatively, from earlier ա՛դա (áda), from Azerbaijani ədə.

Usage notes

The word's modern usage is almost universally perceived as disrespectful outside of close peer groups. Its usage towards elders or strangers is considered a deliberate provocation and is seen as highly impolite.
