From בֵּית (bet, “house”) + חוֹלִים (kholím, “sick people, patients”).
Common enough by the year 1778 to be included in a reedition by the Italian Hebraist Giovanni Battista Gallizioli of Calepinus septem linguarum, hoc est Lexicon Latinum. Compare German Krankenhaus.
