From בֵּית (bet, house) + חוֹלִים (kholím, sick people, patients).

Common enough by the year 1778 to be included in a reedition by the Italian Hebraist Giovanni Battista Gallizioli of Calepinus septem linguarum, hoc est Lexicon Latinum. Compare German Krankenhaus.
