From Akkadian 𒊺 (še'um, grain, measure of grain), from Sumerian 𒊺 (še, barley, grain). Compare Aramaic סָאתָא (sāʾṯā).

Unrelated to Arabic صَاع (ṣāʕ, ṣāʿ), Ge'ez ጽዋዕ (ṣəwaʿ, cup, chalice), Aramaic צעא (bowl), and Ugaritic 𐎕𐎓 (ṣʿ, plate, platter).
