From Akkadian 𒊺 (še'um, “grain, measure of grain”), from Sumerian 𒊺 (še, “barley, grain”). Compare Aramaic סָאתָא (sāʾṯā).
Unrelated to Arabic صَاع (ṣāʕ, “ṣāʿ”), Ge'ez ጽዋዕ (ṣəwaʿ, “cup, chalice”), Aramaic צעא (“bowl”), and Ugaritic 𐎕𐎓 (ṣʿ, “plate, platter”).
