From Middle Persian [script needed] (bndk' /bandag/), from Old Persian 𐎲𐎭𐎣 (baⁿdaka). Compare Sanskrit बन्धक (bandhaka). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (“to bind”).
By surface analysis, بند (band, present stem of بستن (bastan, “to bind”)) + ـه (-e).
