ږمنځ

Pashto

Etymology

Generally derived from Proto-Indo-European *peḱ- (to pluck), but the exact pathway from that root is controversial.

  • Matasović derives this from an extension of an n-stem (Proto-Indo-European *pḱḗn)[1] which would become Proto-Iranian *fšā́. This derivation is compatible with an immediate proto-form *fšanačiH (ESIJa) or *fšančiH (Morgenstierne).
  • Cheung rejects any zero-grade root formation and sets up a proto-form *pašána-čiH.
