Inherited from Aramaic [script needed] (ḥāḇōrā); compare Classical Syriac ܚܵܒ݂ܵܪ (ḥāḇār), Arabic خَابُور (ḵābūr), Akkadian ḫabur, and possibly Sumerian 𒄷𒁓 (Hu-bur, “river; watercourse; netherworld”).
