Semi-learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܟܘܪܬܐ (kawwārtā), feminine equivalent of ܟܘܵܪܵܐ (kwārā, “beehive”), from Akkadian 𒄀𒆤𒈣 (/kuru/, “short reed mat, collection or roll of reeds; a woven thing; hence a basket”), from Sumerian 𒄥 (gur, “to twist, to wind, to turn; a bundle, unit of measure, a basketful of barley”); compare Hebrew כַּוֶּרֶת (kavéret), Arabic كُوَّارَة (kuwwāra) and Ancient Greek κύβερτον (kúberton).
