Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *imám,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *ím suffixed with *-ám.[2] Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬌𐬨𐬆𐬨 (iməm), Old Persian 𐎡𐎶𐎶 (i-m-m /imam/).[3]
