Inherited from Apabhramsa णिंद f (ṇiṃda, “sleep”), with spontaneous nasalization from Prakrit णिद्दा (ṇiddā), from Sanskrit निद्रा (nidrā), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nidráH. Cognate with Gujarati નીંદર (nī̃dar), Marathi नीद (nīd), Konkani न्हीद (nhīd), Dhivehi ނިދި (nidi), Old Awadhi नींद (nīṃda).
