ਅਰਮਾਨ
Punjabi
Etymology
Borrowed from Persian آرمان (ârmân, “desire, ideal”), which itself was likely borrowed from Proto-Sogdic *rm''n (“to move/raise”).[1] The first syllable is likely from Proto-Indo-European *h₃er- (whence English run). Unrelated to English arm which is from *h₂er-. Unrelated to Armenia. Unrelated to Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌼𐌰𐌽 (arman), Vandalic *arman.; Cognate with Tajik Ормон (Ormon, “male given name”), Belarusian ры́нуць (rýnucʹ, “to rush, to dash”), Ancient Greek ὄρνῡμῐ (órnūmĭ, “to set upon”), and Old Armenian յառնեմ (yaṙnem, “to rise”).
