From Old Tamil 𑀧𑁂𑀶𑀼 (pēṟu). Cognate with Old Kannada ಪೆಱು (peṟu), Kannada ಹೆರು (heru), Malayalam പെറുക (peṟuka).

  1. (transitive) to receive, get, gain, obtain, secure
    Synonyms: அடை (aṭai), வாங்கு (vāṅku)
  2. (transitive) to give birth to, beget, bear (a child)
  3. (intransitive) to be worth; be worthy of; fetch a price
    Synonym: தேறு (tēṟu)
  4. (auxiliary, after an infinitive) a passivizer.
    Synonym: படு (paṭu)
  5. (auxiliary, after infinitive) indicates 'in the possession of' or 'in receipt of' when added to those verbs in the sphere of 'get' or 'get formed'.

Usage notes

Except the sense "to give birth to", all the others are only used in Formal Tamil.
