From Proto-Tai *ˀjɯəᴬ (medicine). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩀᩣ, Lao ຢາ (), ᦊᦱ (ẏaa), Tai Dam ꪤꪱ, Shan ယႃ (yǎa), Bouyei iel, Zhuang yw. Compare Middle Chinese (yak).
