Borrowed from Old Chinese 帽 (OC *muːɡs). Cognate with Lao ໝວກ (mūak), Khmer មួក (muək), Mon ဒမှော်. Compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *muuk ~ muək (“hat”).

หมวก • (mùuak) (classifier ใบ)

1. headwear of any kind, as cap, crown, hat, helmet, etc.
   • 1 Samuel 17:5, KJV:

     เขาสวมหมวกทองสัมฤทธิ์ไว้ที่ศีรษะ

     kǎo sǔuam mùuak tɔɔng-sǎm-rít wái tîi sǐi-sà

     And he had an helmet of brass upon his head.

   • Exodus 39:28, KJV:

     และทำผ้า‍มาลา และทำหมวกด้วยผ้า‍ป่าน

     lɛ́ tam pâa maa-laa lɛ́ tam mùuak dûuai pâa bpàan

     And a mitre of fine linen, and goodly bonnets of fine linen,
