ဇာဂနာ

Burmese

Alternative forms

  • ဇာဂဏာ (jaga.na)

Etymology

Unclear. According to MED, borrowed from a Hindi झागना (jhāgnā), though the existence of such a word appears apocryphal. Judson implies instead a spelling of जागणा (jāgṇā), though such a word does not seem to exist either. The closest-sounding attested word, जागना (jāgnā, to wake up), is semantically very distant.

Pronunciation

  • Phonetic respelling: ဇာဂ'နာ
  • IPA(key): /zàɡənà/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: jaga.na • ALA-LC: jāganā • BGN/PCGN: zagăna • Okell: zagăna
