Burmese

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /tè/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: te • ALA-LC: te • BGN/PCGN: te • Okell: tei

Etymology 1

STEDT derives the "beat" sense from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *(d/t)aːj (to pound, crush); cognate with Lahu (to pound, crush, wear away).

While MED groups certain derived terms relating to "doing" with the "beat" sense, STEDT separates them and derives the latter from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *daj (to do, make), whence Mizo ti (to do).
