Etymology

/ponsu/ → /ponzu/

A shift in pronunciation from earlier ポンス (ponsu), borrowed from Dutch pons (“punch”, obsolete, superseded by punch), from English punch. Doublet of パンチ. The use of the 酢 kanji is an example of ateji.^[1]^[2]^[3]
