Etymology

Neologistic variant of Yuan 吉利吉思 (Jílìjísī) and Qing 奇爾吉斯奇尔吉斯. Both were originally referring to the Yenisei Kirghiz people, whereas 布魯特 / 布鲁特 (Bùlǔtè) was used to call the Tian Shan Kirghiz during the Qing period.

Compare Old Turkic 𐰶𐰃𐰺𐰴𐰔 (q̊²ir¹qz /⁠qïrqïz⁠/) and Old Uyghur 𐽲𐽶𐽾𐽲𐽶𐽴 (qyrqyz /⁠qïrqïz⁠/).
