Usage notes

Before 1 June 2025, there were 3 types of imprisonment in Japan, namely 懲役 (chōeki, “penal servitude; rigorous imprisonment”), 禁錮 (kinko, “imprisonment without labour, simple imprisonment”) and 拘留 (kōryū, “imprisonment under 30 days”). With the commencement of amendments to the Penal Code (Act 67 of 17 June 2022), all of them were abolished and merged into one single type of imprisonment.
