Ultimately from Hebrew יְהוּדָה (yehudá). Compare 猶大犹大 (Yóudà). Possibly coined by German missionary Karl Gützlaff.

猶太人犹太人 (yóutàirén) appears to be first attested in 1835 in Eastern Western Monthly Magazine.
