Chinese
Glyph origin
Characters in the same phonetic series (罪) (Zhengzhang, 2003)
Ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): 自 + 辛, hence "nose" + "chisel; knife to mark prisoners" to indicate the concept of criminal, perhaps with a reference to cutting the nose as a form of punishment. Later, 辠 was substituted by 𦋛 (> 罪), originally a net for fishing, due to the similarity of the former character to 皇, which represents the Emperor.
