Back-formation from New Latin bactērium (as a supposed Greek construction similar to *βακτήρ + -ιον (-ion, diminutive suffix), the first reshaped similarly to γαστήρ (gastḗr, belly)), in turn from Ancient Greek βακτήριον (baktḗrion) and Ancient Greek βᾰκτηρῐ́ᾱ (băktērĭ́ā).
