-vuldig

Dutch

Etymology

From eastern dialects, perhaps especially Brabantian. The /ʏ/-vowel is from umlaut of Middle Dutch -voldich. Since the o here goes back to West Germanic *a, probably through analogical alteration of -veldich, which is attested in Limburgish texts. Compare German -fältig.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈvʏldəx/
  • Audio:(file)

Suffix

-vuldig

  1. (now rare and unproductive) alternative form of -voudig

Usage notes

  • Only this form is standard in zorgvuldig. A limited number of other adjectives have both forms alongside, that in -vuldig being dated in all but a handful of cases.
